Xiaomi releases kernel sources for the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S

When it comes to releasing kernel source code in a timely manner, few Android device makers are doing things correctly. Google, OnePlus, and recently Razer have released theirs fairly quickly compared to the competition. Among those that have failed to abide by the GPL, Xiaomi has been one of the worst offenders. The company took many months to release the kernel source code for the Xiaomi Mi A1, the company’s first Android One device, hindering development for the device on our forums.

The Mi A1 outrage seems to have made a difference, however, as the company recently reconfirmed their commitment to releasing timely kernel source code no more than 3 months after the release of a new device. Today, they’re following through on that promise as the recently released Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S, their latest bezel-less flagship device, now has kernel source code available for it less than a month after its announcement. While the device may already be able to enjoy basic AOSP custom ROM support thanks to Project Treble support, a kernel source code release will help to make sure that many bugs with an AOSP ROM can be resolved. These kernel sources correspond to the latest Android 8.0 release.

Developers interested in working on the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S (which, as we already covered, features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 system-on-chip with 8 GB of RAM and a vertically mounted dual rear camera) should go to the GitHub link below and download the kernel sources to get started with the device. Users looking to flash custom ROMs and kernels should keep an eye out for any new threads on our official forums for the device as development will start to pick up once the device becomes more available internationally.
